Main steps in our value chain
and management of our impacts Overview
Suppliers
We purchase raw materials, equipment, energy, gas, chemicals, and services from many suppliers and subcontractors.
Management of our impacts
Sharing the same values
We are committed to partnering with suppliers who share our values of respecting people and doing business with integrity and excellence.
Our main Responsible Supply Chain program is based on the RBA (Responsible Business Alliance) methodology and addresses labor and human rights, safety, ethics, and environmental risks.
Responsible Mineral Sourcing
We conduct due diligence in our sub-tier supply chain to ensure we do not procure raw materials that are directly or indirectly associated with human rights violations and minimize environmental impact.
As an active participant in the Responsible Mineral Initiative (RMI), we guarantee responsible sourcing of the 3TG (tantalum, tin, tungsten, and gold) we use, and we monitor our cobalt supply chain.
Compliance
We require our suppliers to respect our EHS-regulated substances list, which contains more than 3,300 substances and is regularly reviewed. We also require them to confirm their compliance through analytical certificates, safety datasheets and commitments.
R&D concept and design
New products are created in a multi-step process including architecture conception, electrical layout, electrical and logic simulation, chip layout, and generation of the masks that will be used to etch the design in silicon.
Management of our impacts
Sustainable Technology
Through our Sustainable Technology program we design products systematically, taking into consideration the environmental impact of the device during its whole lifecycle, including raw materials, transportation, manufacturing, usage, and end of life.
Our eco-design process helps ST’s product development teams innovate to reduce our impact on the planet’s resources.
Protect and respect our people
We protect the health and safety of our employees through advanced management systems and certification such as ISO45001.
We implement our Code of Conduct and the RBA standards in all our sites to mitigate our ethics and labor and human rights risks, and carry out regular assessments and audits in all our major sites.
Hazardous substances
We develop products that are free of hazardous substances through the Ecopack program. We also proactively work with our suppliers and researchers to develop suitable alternatives to hazardous substances for the near future.
Front-end manufacturing
Manufacturing chips requires around 400 separate stages, starting with a plain wafer and resulting in the etching of several hundreds to thousands of dies.
Management of our impacts
Protect the environment
ST is committed to becoming carbon neutral by 2027. We deploy programs to reduce our direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions from all our operations, including perfluorinated compounds (PFCs), which have a very long atmospheric lifetime and high global warming potential. We implement programs to save energy and use more renewable energy.
Front-end manufacturing requires large quantities of water and some ST sites are located in water scarce regions. Through our water management programs we are continually reducing our water footprint through reuse and recycling. All our wastewater is treated before being discharged into the environment.
We reduce, reuse, recycle or recover as much of our waste as possible, rather than sending it to incineration or landfill.

Apply precautionary principles
We minimize the environmental, health and safety risks related to the chemicals and materials used in the manufacturing process, by basing the selection, handling, and substitution on the precautionary principles.
Electrical wafer sorting
Dies on the wafer are electrically tested.
This step is known as wafer sort or probe.

Back-end manufacturing
The dies are cut from the wafer before being assembled in a package. The chips are then tested prior to delivery to the customer.

Product use and end of life
We offer a large portfolio of products suitable for the wide range of applications addressed by our customers.
Management of our impacts
Responsible applications
We deliver products and solutions that support a more sustainable world. We develop technologies to enable our customers to create responsible applications for safer, greener and smarter living.
End of life anticipation
We are committed to ensuring our products meet or exceed applicable environmental requirements such as REACH, RoHS and HSPM. Ecopack processes and classification help us monitor the substances used in our products, which in turn facilitates end of life and recycling when our devices are disposed of.
Reduce carbon footprint
Our products are designed to minimize the carbon footprint and consume as little energy as possible in the end-application.
